1. Fishing

Grab your fishing tackle and try out all the great spots around Kerrville to wet your hook. At Shanto Ranch, there are ten well-stocked fishing lakes where you can hook channel and blue catfish, a variety of sunfish, and largemouth bass. The beautiful Guadalupe River is teeming with largemouth bass, flathead, and channel catfish close to dams and reservoirs. A good access point to a long stretch of the river is from the Guadalupe River State Park.

If you drive out to the 6,449-acre Lake Lyndon B. Johnson, you are sure to catch crappie, sunfish, white and channel catfish, and white, Guadalupe, and largemouth bass. Those in the know say that one of the top fishing spots is around the docks on the Colorado River arm of the lake. The 5,426-acre artificial Medina Lake is another fishing destination where you will hook a big one. Here you can cast your line from the piers and boat ramps.

2. Paddling and Boating

Enjoy a day of peaceful paddling on the Guadalupe River. The best place to launch your canoe or kayak is from Kerrville-Schreiner Park that stretches out along the banks of the river. If you don’t have a canoe or kayak, you can rent one at the park. If you feel more adventurous, you can also drive the 50 miles to Guadalupe River State Park to wet your oars in the river.

It’s also well worth the 47.5-mile drive to Medina Lake. The lake is 18 miles long and three miles wide and just the place for a day on the open water. There are public two-lane concrete boat ramps at Red Cove Camp in Mico and at Park Road 37 in Plum Creek Cove. For even more boating and paddling fun, head out to Lake Lyndon B. Johnson. The Yacht Club and Marina rent out a wide range of watercraft for fun on the lake.

3. Camping

Pack your camping gear for a tranquil camping experience on the banks of the Guadalupe River. The Kerrville-Schreiner Park Campground offers a range of camping options from 30 and 50 amp RV and tent sites that overlook the river to cabins and a Ranch House. Here you can enjoy a variety of exciting activities. Campers have access to miles of hiking and biking trails, kayak and canoe rentals, the butterfly garden, and scenic picnic areas with grills.

The River Campground is another great place to experience the outdoors. By The River provides outdoor enthusiasts with 65-acres of natural beauty to explore. The peaceful campground has scenic RV and tent sites along the river. If you venture a bit further, you can enjoy unforgettable camping experiences in the nearby Garner State Park and Lyndon B. Johnson State Park.
