1. Admire the Works of Great Western Artists

The Museum of Western Art, a fun and educational outing for the whole family, showcases the heritage of the American West through incredible Western Art. The museum’s Journey West Children’s Gallery tells the captivating tale of the American West through the eyes of a young child. You and the kids can dress in period clothing, peek inside a Native American Teepee, and climb into a prairie wagon.

The museum also hosts fun events for kids like Mowa Crafters on the 2nd Saturday of each month, allowing little ones to learn and discover various arts and crafts, and a free family day on the last Saturday of every month.

The Museum of Western Art is at 1550 Bandera Highway in Kerrville and is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

2. Get Outdoorsy at Kerrville-Schreiner Park

Kerrville-Schreiner Park on the Guadalupe River is a lovely destination for families looking for outdoor fun. With 517 acres to explore, you and the kids can put on your hiking boots or jump on your bicycles and take in the beautiful scenery on seven miles of trails. Stroll through the Pollinator Garden, filled with indigenous plants, creating a critical food source for butterflies, bees, beetles, moths, and hummingbirds.

You can also paddle down the river, fish from the pier, play basketball and volleyball, and take the kids picnicking. You can even rent canoes and kayaks and stay overnight at the campground or mini cabins.

Kerrville-Schreiner Park is at 2385 Bandera Highway in Kerrville and is open daily between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

3. Hike or Bike Down a Section of the Scenic River Trail

Take the kids on a hiking or biking adventure down the 6-mile River Trail along the beautiful Guadalupe River and winds through Kerrville’s park system. Begin your journey at the Riverside Nature Center, a wildlife and indigenous plant sanctuary. Pop in at the center to view the nature displays, fossils exhibit, and live critters.

Get back on the trail and make your way for 0.7 miles down the trail to the picturesque Tranquility Island in the Guadalupe River in Louise Hays Park, where there’s an interactive fountain, playground, bike rentals, and restroom facilities.

You can access the River Trail from Riverside Nature Center at 150 Francisco Lemos Street, open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or Louise Hays Park at 202 Thompson Drive, open from dawn to 11 p.m.
